Message from Kathi Wallace, Director of Education about tragedy in La Lochehttp://orc.scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news/board-news/45Message from Kathi Wallace, Director of Education about tragedy in La Loche
We were all shocked to hear the news of the school shooting in La Loche, Saskatchewan on Friday.

When these rare and tragic events happen, I think many of us feel a similar ache in our hearts. An ache of sadness, helplessness and sometimes anger.

Devastating events can help remind us of what's most important in life. Our relationships. Our love. Our kindness. How we treat each other matters.

Our mental health team has provided tips for staff to help them deal with questions they may receive about what happened on Friday. While we don't encourage class-wide discussions, we know children do hear about major events and may have questions. It's important our staff members are prepared to deal with those situations.

Our mental health team has also provided tips for parents on how to help children cope: http://sharingsimcoe.com/?s=helping+children+cope.

The team also recommends the following resource from the Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/childrens-health/in-depth/helping-children-cope/art-20047029

As always, our priority is the safety and well-being of each of our students. This is a responsibility we take very seriously. It's important for parents to know help is available through our schools and community agencies. Parents who are concerned about their children can always contact their principal or vice-principal.

Sincerely,

Kathi Wallace
